  汉字作为精神的载体，远溯上古时期，就以刻写连通天地祈问，承载着先民的敬畏与想象。汉字本身便蕴藏着一种远古的神性。曾翔此次展出的四十余件作品，便是围绕这一命题进行的探索。

  长久以来，看待书法，已经形成一种惯性：必先辨识字句，再品赏笔墨。文字更多地承担语言传递的功用，而就形式上的欣赏，也随着书史演进逐渐范式化。这两方面，都削弱了文字诞生之初的那份通灵的精神气质。艺术家试图调转这种观看逻辑，创作了这些作品。

  他不作仿古摹刻，不去重复甲骨碑版的外在形态。所要追寻的，并非古文字的外壳，而是文字萌生之际的本源精神。那时符号尚未被严格规训，书写保有着原初的想象力。

  在他的创作中，一切仿佛都在运动。文字时而可以辨识，时而裂解、缠绕、弥散，向着图像的方向游走。线条回旋、交叠、铺展，将汉字从纯粹的语言工具之中释放出来，让线条、形态、气息拥有独属于自身的表达分量。

  这是一场面向源头的回望，而非怀古式的怀旧。以文字为线索，以水墨为媒介，隔着悠远的时间，去触碰造字之初万象合一的混沌灵息。不再将“可读可解”当作观看的唯一标尺，在书写与图像、符号与精神的交界，尝试让埋藏于文字源头的远古神性，在当代空间重新显现。

  As the vessels of cultural spirit, Chinese characters can be traced back to antiquity, when inscriptions were carved to communicate with world to seek answers, carrying with their respects and imagination toward early ancestors. Thus, Chinese characters contain a divinely ancient spirit. More than forty works by Zeng Xiang presented in this exhibition constitutes an exploration centered on this proposition.

  It's been a long time that, the approach to calligraphy has followed an ingrained pattern: people firstly identify the meanings, and then appreciate the brushwork. Writing is now more likely in the function of conveying information, rather than the appreciation of its aesthetic value, which has relatively decreased the original vibe of its spiritual culture.

  The artist seeks to reverse such logic through these works. He’s not meant to imitate or reproduce ancient inscriptions, but revived the old version of oracle-bone script. What he seeks is not the shell of ancient writing, but the original spirit from where wording first emerged. At that time, symbols had not yet subjected to strict regulation, which still retained its primordial imaginative power.

  In his work, everything seems to be in a variation. The characters are still viable that they deconstructed, twisted, dispersed, then drifting toward the realm of imagery. Lines curved and unfolded, that liberates Chinese characters from their role as merely linguistic instruments to allow the lines, forms and their breath to express their own right.

  This is a returning to the root, rather than a replication of the old version. Taking writing as its own form of expression, reaches across the time to touch the original spirit in which all things converged at the dawn of written language. By no longer treating “legibility” as the only standard of viewing, these artworks feel alive in between wording and image, symbol and spirit, trying to allow the ancient sacred spirit with the source of writing to re-emerge in a contemporary space.

  曾翔，号一夫、曲堂、木木堂、三牖竹榴斋。

  1958年出生，湖北随州人，国家一级美术师。

  曾任中国艺术研究院中国书法院办公室主任、研究生院硕士生导师、中国书法院研究员、中国国家画院书法篆刻院秘书长、篆刻研究所所长、中国国家画院书法篆刻院艺委会副主任、湖北书法院副院长、北京理工大学中国陶瓷印艺术研究中心艺术委员会主任。

  现为中国国家画院研究员、韩国牧园大学硕士生导师。
